Why Cleveland's rental housing stock varies so much in age

Cleveland's neighborhoods were largely built out in the early-to-mid 1900s, so much of the city's rental housing — including many homes we manage in Slavic Village (44105), Collinwood (44110), Glenville (44108), and Hough (44103) — predates 1978. Under the City of Cleveland's Lead-Safe Certification program, rental units built before January 1, 1978 are presumed to contain lead-based paint and must pass a lead-safe inspection to be certified. The program began in 2019, carried a compliance deadline of March 1, 2023, and certification is valid for two years before a property must be re-evaluated.

That's part of why "renovated" means different things on different blocks: a recently updated kitchen doesn't always mean the whole structure has been brought up to current standards, and vice versa. Ask about both cosmetic updates and lead-safe certification status for any specific address you're considering, especially in older sections of the city where original construction predates the 1978 threshold by several decades.

What kind of updates do renters typically find?
